Free Software (The Free Software I Use!).
Collected on this page is a selection of the free software that I actually use myself. It was prompted by an email I received from a user of the Hsin Lin freeware files, who was interested to know the free software I am actually using at the moment - so here they are!
I use Zone Alarm as my firewall - it is (in my opinion) the best firewall available today, free or otherwise, and Zone Alarm IS free software.

I use Irfan View for almost ALL my image manipulation tasks as a webmaster. I use it to resize images, prepare thumbnails, crop photographs and add special effects to images. This is one piece of free graphics software that I would not be without.

The Anti-Virus free software that I use is AVG from Grisoft. I have used this free anti-virus software almost form launch and I have found it to give excellent anti-virus protection. It is totally free software and updates are regular and free. I wouldn't go online without it's protection.

I am one of the sad people (I know, I know) who insists on using a text editor to develop and publish web-sites. The Note Tab free software is absolutely essential to me. It's text editing and text manipulation features allow me to work on multiple files at the same time, do multiple search and replace operations and the favorites options makes opening and working on lots of text or html files at the same time, easy. Free software I rely on for my work.

My free software world wide web browser of choice is Opera. I know, I know that technically it is ad-ware when you use the free version but it is one of the only kinds of software of this type that I accept (I wish it was totally free software). The mail client built into Opera is excellent and once you get to know its capabilities is a very powerful tool. I find Opera to be essential free software for my email handling and web browsing.

There are a number of ad-aware type software available to keep your computer protected, and some of the others are very good free software, but I have always preferred AD-AWARE. It is easy to use and install, and of course it is FREE SOFTWARE. If you are not using this kind of protective software then you have only yourself to blame if your computer gets clogged up and runs slowly from all the adware and spyware that sneakily installs itself. Ad-Aware is free software.
Ad-Aware Freeware - Ad-Aware Freeware - Ad-aware is a free multi-spyware removal tool that detects and safely removes advertising spyware from your system. Recommended - you will be amazed at what it will find on your own system - be warned though, some spyware like GoZilla! and Comet Cursor will no longer work after running Ad-Aware.
To keep my hard drive in order, the free software I use is Buzzsaw. I have it running all the time and it defragments files on the fly. I am convinced that this contributes to the longevity of the hard disks in my desktop computer and laptop (I have buzzsaw running on both).
DIRMS and BUZZSAW Free Defragmentation Programs for Windows NT4, NT2000, and XP - DIRMS and BUZZSAW Free Defragmentation Programs for Windows NT4, NT2000, and XP - DIRMS and BUZZSAW are free disk defrag utilities by the same author. DIRMS is a free command line utility to defragment your entire drive. BUZZSAW ia an On-The-Fly Defragmentation Program. Use both to keep your disk drive defragmented and in tip-top condition. DIRMS, as the author explains, stands for "Do It Right Microsoft". He explains why Dirms and Buzzsaw are better than the Windows Defragmentation program in NT and XP. Buzzsaw and Dirms are both freeware and are essential disk defragmentation utilities.
To update my web sites and upload files, the free software I use is WS-FTP-LE. This free software does everything I need in an FTP client and is reliable and easy to use. (suits me!).
